The Importance of Wearing Retainers after Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is an incredibly vital part of feeling and looking your best. Because most people see your smile the first time that they look at you, it is important that you work with an orthodontist to have orthodontic work done at your own convenience. Whether you are the one having the work done or you are taking your child in for braces, the aftercare of orthodontic work is often just as important as going for the work itself. If you avoid the aftercare, you will find that your teeth begin to shift and you need more orthodontic work and braces to correct the situation.

What Is an Orthodontist?

dentist orthodontist looking at somethingAre Dentists and Orthodontists the Same?

Dentists and orthodontists are trained physicians that are in related fields but serve very different purposes. Dentists take care of the general health of the teeth, gums, and mouth. Orthodontists are dentists that go further and receive special training in the alignment, positioning, and placement of teeth and jaws and if necessary, can correct any serious issues with any of those problems. How do I know if I need to see an orthodontist? Generally, the dentist will refer a patient to the orthodontist and then throughout the treatment plan, the two will work closely together. If the dentist notices problems with the positioning and placement of the teeth that could cause potential health problems, he will make the recommendation that orthodontic treatment is in order.

What are the duties of an orthodontist? The field of orthodontia is a field of dentistry that specializes in diagnosing and treating teeth that are not positioned correctly or are out of alignment. Orthodontists also treat problems with the positioning of the jaws. Orthodontists receive a great deal of specialized training beyond dentistry in order to prevent and treat these issues. A good analogy is a general doctor who goes beyond and receives additional training to become a specialist.

Orthodontic Fact #10 The first ever certified orthodontist in the United States is Dr. Charles Tweed from the late 18th century

dr charles tweedOrthodontic Fact #10 The first ever certified orthodontist in the United States is Dr. Charles Tweed from the late 18th century

A century ago, people who had crooked teeth didn’t have many options. Braces had not been invented yet, much less modern alternatives like Invisalign. Orthodontics was just getting started. One of the key figures in the evolution of this specialty was Dr. Charles H. Tweed, who became the first professionally certified orthodontist in the United States.

Background and Education

Charles Tweed was born in 1895 in Phoenix, Arizona. He did undergraduate work at Stanford University. Tweed graduated from the University of California in 1919 with a D.D.S. He soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to study at the Angle School of Orthodontia. Edward Angle, who founded the school, was one of the seminal figures in the emerging field of orthodontics. Young Dr. Tweed soon became one of Angle’s proteges.

Research and Innovation

During the early 1920s, Angle invented a remarkable device that he called an edgewise appliance. Comprised of wire and adjusted with bands, this device gradually straightened a patient’s teeth. The edgewise appliance soon acquired the name braces. In 1925, Angle selected Dr. Tweed to help him to prepare this innovation for manufacturing and introduction to clinical practice.

Over time, Tweed observed that the failure rate for braces was high. In some patient, the teeth had a tendency to relapse and shift back to their crooked positions. Tweed realized that this problem could be solved by selectively extracting a few teeth. Tweed presented his findings to the American Association of Orthodontists in 1940.

Career and Legacy

Tweed eventually moved back to the western United States, settling in his native Arizona. In 1947, he created the Charles H. Tweed for Orthodontic Research. Today, the Foundation continues its mission of fostering the exchange of ideas and providing cutting-edge resources to the orthodontic profession.

hippocratesOrthodontic Fact #9 Irregularities of the teeth is one of the earliest writings about dental deformities, written by Hippocrates in 400 B.C.

Hippocrates Was Unable to Fix Irregularities of the Teeth

Hippocrates was a physician in Greece who described malocclusions of the teeth in 400 B.C. While the people living in those times were unable to do anything about irregularities of their teeth, you can visit an orthodontist for treatment. At an orthodontic facility, you can have a modern examination with top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment that can project how your teeth will look after you wear Invisalign aligners or braces. You will learn if you have mild or serious malocclusions that require treatment to improve your smile and bite. Some orthodontic treatments require only six months to complete while others can last as long as four years.

You Can Fix Your Teeth With Modern Orthodontic Treatment

The individuals living in ancient Greece weren’t able to correct wide spaces between their teeth, leading to unattractive smiles and the inability to chew food properly. Having straight teeth is important for your overall well-being because it prevents other health problems such as chronic headaches or bruxism. If you can wear clear Invisalign aligners, then you can remove the devices to brush and floss your teeth. When you need to wear braces, the brackets and wires will remain on your teeth, but you can request lingual devices that are placed on the backs of your teeth.

Orthodontic Fact #7 Some dental wires used in dental braces are activated by body heat and were developed by NASA.

nasaOrthodontic Fact #7 Some dental wires used in dental braces are activated by body heat and were developed by NASA.

How NASA Has Improved Orthodontic Treatment

NASA has made a valuable contribution to orthodontic care by creating wires that are activated by body heat. These metallic wires are useful for braces so that the devices fit better on a patient’s teeth. The only way to know if you require orthodontic treatment is to schedule an appointment with an orthodontist who has the top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment. You might feel as if you are in a scientific laboratory in a modern orthodontic facility that uses computer-assisted X-ray machines. Within minutes, you can see how your teeth look now along with seeing how your teeth will look with orthodontic treatment.

Treatment For Malocclusions Can Require Six Months to Four Years

If an orthodontist determines that you have only mild malocclusions, then you can wear custom-fitted Invisalign aligners for six months to one year. However, if you have major malocclusions, then you will require brackets and wires to repair your teeth in two to four years. Today, you can choose braces that have tiny brackets and thin wires that are often placed on the backs of your teeth where the devices are nearly impossible to see. Alternatively, you can select color-matching ceramic brackets that are also barely noticeable by others.

Orthodontic Fact #5 Braces are now worn as a fashion statement

smileHave Your Teeth Straightened With Unique Orthodontic Devices

If you are a teenager who needs braces, then you don’t need to wear boring color-matching ceramic or metallic brackets to fix your teeth. Today, many teenagers are choosing colorful brackets and wires for their braces in order to have a fashionable appearance. The most important thing about getting your teeth straightened is visiting an orthodontist for an evaluation. When you have moderate to serious malocclusions, you will need to wear wires and brackets to repair the problems. However, when you only have mild misalignments, you can wear removable Invisalign aligners instead.

Colorful Brackets and Wires Will Make Orthodontic Treatment a Lot of Fun

An orthodontist will provide information concerning colorful brackets or bands. You can choose one color such as red, blue or yellow, but you can also select a rainbow of different colors to express your personality. Wearing beautiful colors of brackets and wires can offer you an attractive facial appearance along with looking fantastic with your clothing. If you select a unique color of braces, then your friends will recognize you anywhere by simply seeing your smile. Wearing bright colorful wires and brackets can make undergoing orthodontic treatment fun.

Orthodontic Fact #3 – Here’s a Fun Fact: All Orthodontists are Dentists

bracesOrthodontic Fact #3 – Here’s a Fun Fact: All Orthodontists are Dentists, But Only 5 Percent of Dentists are Orthodontics. Confusing, Isn’t It?

You know what dentists do and are probably familiar with the work of orthodontists. However, you may not realize that while every orthodontist is a dentist, not every dentist is an orthodontist. Both are professionals who are dedicated to your dental health, but orthodontists are specifically concerned with the alignment of teeth, especially in children.

Understanding the Principles of Orthodontics

Not everyone has naturally straight teeth, with so-called malocclusions often developing at the end of childhood. Fortunately, orthodontists can correct most of these problems with braces. Orthodontic care is primarily concerned with these issues:

  • Straightening teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Correcting bite problems
  • Aligning the mouth and lips

The Importance of Straight Teeth

Straight teeth are an important part of a person’s facial appearance. Additionally, teeth that are poorly aligned can be difficult to clean, which can increase a person’s susceptibility to dental disorders. Teeth that are not straight can also affect the digestive process and can even cause speech difficulties. Although orthodontic devices are normally worn by children, they can also benefit adults who want to look their best.

The Different Types of Orthodontic Devices

Many tools are available to orthodontists for the purpose of straightening teeth. Traditional wire braces are commonly used and have a record of success in accomplishing this goal. The Damon system is effective on those with serious malocclusions. The Invisalign system employs clear plastic aligners that can be removed for eating and brushing and are ideal for those who are uncomfortable with conventional braces.

Considering Orthodontic Treatment

Possessing training beyond that of a dentist, an orthodontist is uniquely qualified to determine whether you or your child needs braces. If you are considering such treatment, schedule an appointment with Childers Orthodontics at 618-438-2815.
