What Is an Orthodontist?

dentist orthodontist looking at somethingAre Dentists and Orthodontists the Same?

Dentists and orthodontists are trained physicians that are in related fields but serve very different purposes. Dentists take care of the general health of the teeth, gums, and mouth. Orthodontists are dentists that go further and receive special training in the alignment, positioning, and placement of teeth and jaws and if necessary, can correct any serious issues with any of those problems. How do I know if I need to see an orthodontist? Generally, the dentist will refer a patient to the orthodontist and then throughout the treatment plan, the two will work closely together. If the dentist notices problems with the positioning and placement of the teeth that could cause potential health problems, he will make the recommendation that orthodontic treatment is in order.

What are the duties of an orthodontist? The field of orthodontia is a field of dentistry that specializes in diagnosing and treating teeth that are not positioned correctly or are out of alignment. Orthodontists also treat problems with the positioning of the jaws. Orthodontists receive a great deal of specialized training beyond dentistry in order to prevent and treat these issues. A good analogy is a general doctor who goes beyond and receives additional training to become a specialist.

orthodontic emergency on vacation

LAST UPDATED: DECEMBER 26, 2017

At Childers Orthodontics, there are a few things we want to remind you of when you’re on vacation so that a day with friends and family won’t be spent dealing with an orthodontic emergency.

FAQ

Can I call the office?

Firstly, we are here for you whether you are in town or out of town on vacation. Give us a call and we may be able to address the problem over the phone. Second, if we are unable to help you fix the problem over the phone, we will help you find an orthodontic practice in your vacation area that can help you.

What if I can’t reach the office?

If you experience problems reaching our office, we suggest going online and searching for orthodontic practices in your area. Most orthodontists will lend a helping hand to another orthodontic patient and get them out of pain or discomfort.

What foods should I avoid?

If you have braces, whether they are metal, ceramic, or lingual, Dr. Kyle Childers and our team suggest steering clear of the following foods to avoid broken brackets and/or wire distortion while you are on vacation:

  • Chewy, sticky, or gummy food
  • Apples, pears and other whole fruits (cut fruit into thin wedges before consuming)
  • Bagels and hard rolls
  • Bubble gum
  • Corn on the cob
  • Hard candies
  • Hard cookies
  • Pretzels
  • All varieties of nuts, including peanuts, almonds, and cashews

What if I lose my Invisalign?

Finally, if you have clear aligners and you lose your tray, don’t worry! Simply put in either the previous tray or the next tray and contact us as soon as you get home!

Follow these tips and you can have a worry-free vacation! Give us a call at (618) 438-2815 in case of an emergency.

“Days may smile and may not. But you can smile anytime, just smile.” ― Samar AlDhamadi

“Days may smile and may not. But you can smile anytime, just smile.” ― Samar AlDhamadi

Every day presents us with a choice. We can choose whether to smile or not to smile. We can choose whether to show the world the brightness of our spirit by offering a big, bright smile, or we an choose to hide the light of our spirit from others.

The great beauty of a smile is that it offers so much to another person, and it really costs us nothing to give. By smiling at another person (whether we are wearing braces or not), we are sharing a great part of ourselves. In a sense, we are offering love, even if that person is a stranger. We are offering a welcome from our spirit to another, without really asking anything in return. When you stop to think of it, a smile is an enormously generous gesture to share with another person.

Why is it Hard to Smile?

Samar AlDhamadi said, “Days may smile and may not. But you can smile anytime, just smile.” Yes, a smile is free to give and it offers multitudes, whether or not the person has seen an orthodontist or not. Straight teeth (achieved by an orthodonist and invisalign and braces) are beautiful, but the essence of a smile is the joy it conveys to another person. So why is it hard for some people to smile?

Some people have a hard time smiling at others because of innate shyness, and yes, this is a hard thing to overcome. However, with a little practice, smiling can come more easily and more naturally. The amazing thing about a smile is that it brightens ups the feelings of the person who receives it, and it also brightens up the person who is smiling. That’s all the more reason why a smile should be shared on a regular basis.

The essence of the joy a smile brings is that it offers the world a new perspective. Smiling means we are making a choice to enjoy life in all its simple pleasures, and by sharing that smile we are sending the message that life is meant to be enjoyed and savored.

A clean bright smile is a beautiful thing, but of course some people do feel self conscious about smiling if they never had the chance to see an orthodontist and wear braces. The good news today is that now with invisalign teeth straighteners, those who missed out on getting a straighter smile in their youth can have it now, with a minimum of hassle.

“I Have a Tickle in my Brain and it Keeps Making the Corners in my Mouth Point Towards the Heavens”

It’s common knowledge that smiles are infectious. Smiles resulting from pure joy make the entire face feel ecstatic. However, conditions exist that cause many people to feel self-conscious about their appearance when they smile. For instance, uneven teeth, gaps, and overbites can all put a damper on expressions of joy. Fortunately, an experienced orthodontist can fit you with braces that will leave you with a smile worth beaming about.

Braces for the 21st century

There was a time when braces were primarily for young teens, but modern Invisalign technology makes it possible for adults to get smile restructuring too. After all, those in professional positions or people who are active on the dating scene probably don’t wan to be seen with a mouthful of metal. Your orthodontist can fit you with Invisalign products that discreetly straighten teeth without being noticeable to others. Because these products are removable, you can continue your dental hygiene program of brushing and flossing uninterrupted, and unlike teenagers who wear traditional teeth-straightening devices, you’ll be able to continue enjoying your favorite foods for the duration of your treatment. Your friends, dates, acquaintances, coworkers, and business contacts won’t see the braces in your mouth, but they will notice improvements in your smile as time goes by.

Your orthodontist will remove the aligner and replace it with a new one every two weeks. This process will continue for approximately two years, when you’ll emerge with the dazzling smile you’ve always dreamed of having. You’ll experience a customized treatment plan designed to meet your individual needs and preferences, and you’ll recapture that feeling your had as a child when you smiled with joy without feeling a shred of inhibiting self consciousness.

“The world is like a mirror; frown at it, and it frowns at you. Smile and it smiles, too” – Herbert Samuels

smile quotes

You Can Smile Instead of Frowning

Smiling at the world is like a mirror because it will smile back at you. When Herbert Samuels was having a bad day, he noticed that frowning led to having others frown back at him. This is an important lesson to learn, but if you avoid smiling because your teeth are misaligned, then you probably don’t want to smile. However, it is easy to visit an orthodontist to have an examination to determine if you can have your teeth straightened by wearing braces or aligners. If you have mild malocclusions, then you can undergo treatment with aligners.

Wear Aligners to Straighten Your Teeth

If you are worried about smiling while wearing aligners, then stop worrying because the devices are clear and fit comfortably over your teeth. You can smile all day, and no will notice that you are wearing the devices. An orthodontist can make your aligners by taking molds of your top and bottom teeth. Within a few days, you will receive your first set of aligners that you must wear for two weeks. If the aligners are working correctly, then the orthodontic office will give you more sets of Invisalign aligners to wear.

Damon® Smile Braces

Damon Smile Braces

For most patients, traditional braces are far from ideal. They are often very uncomfortable for the patient because the ties that connect wires to the teeth prevent them from moving. Ties are used to create a heavy force, but the force cuts off the blood supply between the root of the tooth and the bone surrounding it. Teeth can’t move until the blood flow is restored.

Damon® Smile Braces aims to guide teeth gently and continuously and reduce the use of force. Patients have reported that the entire experience of wearing braces is a lot more comfortable. Proud to offer Damon Smile to patients, Dr. Kyle Childers can help you better understand if it’s right for you.

How Damon Smile Works

Unlike traditional treatment with braces, Damon Smile doesn’t require the removal of teeth or the use of palatal expanders. The system uses unique self-ligating braces, in which a specialized clip with a “door” replaces elastics or other ties. The “door” guides the archwire, and allows the teeth to move gently into the proper position. Because of the increased flexibility of the self-ligating brace, it exerts less pressure on individual teeth, and this means you won’t have to get adjustments as frequently.
Another advantage is the fact that the gentler, low-friction force means you won’t experience the long-term discomfort from intense pressure on your teeth, or the tight wires that are so common with traditional braces. Because there are no ties, Damon braces are also much easier to clean.

Three Components of Damon Smile

There are three components of Damon Smile that create faster results, require fewer appointments, and cause less discomfort for patients.

  1. Because Damon Smile doesn’t use metal or plastic ties, there is no need to tighten the wire on the braces.
  2. Lightweight shape-memory wires allow teeth the freedom to move faster, without the need for as many adjustments as occur with traditional braces.
  3. Damon Smile realigns teeth and enhances facial appearance without extracting teeth or using rapid palatal expanders. The slide mechanism of Damon braces facilitates faster, more comfortable repositioning of your teeth.

Damon Smile technology can offer you the option of braces that require fewer adjustments, with less pressure on the teeth and the entire mouth. Book an appointment with Dr. Kyle Childers to determine whether Damon Smile is the best option for you or your child.
