Located in Williamson County in the southern region of Illinois, Herrin is a city with a population of around 12,500 people. The city is named for Isaac Herring, an early pioneer settler and Baptist minister who first settled in the area. The area, which was full of prairie grass, soon became a popular settlement and was named Herring’s Prairie, and later shortened to just Herrin.
Herrin is home to several well known people. The city is the birthplace of Joseph Ozbourn, a man who was awarded a Medal of Honor for sacrificing his life to save his fellow Marines. Country music star David Lee Murphy was also born in Herrin. Former Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman was raised in Herrin. The city has also been home to many successful basketball players and coaches including John Tidwell and Steve Fisher.
Located south of Chittyville in Southern Illinois, the city of Herrin has an area of 9.47 square miles. Visitors can find Herrin near Highway 13 and Interstate 57. Herrin is also situated near Crab Orchard Lake and the national wildlife refuge located there.
Students in Herrin receive high quality education in a small town atmosphere. Herrin is home to Herrin High School, the home of the Herrin Tigers. The school is located on North 10th Street. Younger students attend Herrin Elementary and Herrin Middle School. Students in Herrin have many opportunities to get involved in school activities including band, Art Club, Scholar Bowl, and a wide variety of athletics.
On Memorial Day weekend, residents and guests of Herrin can enjoy the city’s Herrinfesta Italiana. The celebration remembers the town’s Italian heritage. The celebration typically attracts large crowds, with previous years drawing in over 60,000 attendants. The event features Italian food, a carnival, sports tournaments, contests, games, and musical performances. Past musical guests at Herrinfesta have included Dixie Chicks, Josh Gracin, Blue Oyster Cult, and Florida Georgia Line.
The city is home to a number of different medical facilities for residents. Herrin Hospital is located on South 14th Street. A number of other specialty clinics including a cardiovascular specialist and chiropractic office are also located in the city.
