Invisalign Gum Damage (Full Breakdown)

A major advantage in using Invisalign clear aligners is that the appliances are less dramatic and cumbersome in the mouth for the patients. Because they have fewer parts as compared to braces, aligners push the teeth into alignment, creating less pain than traditional braces. Is there any relation to gum recession? Read on to find out if there is a link between clear aligners gum damage  First, let’s see what Invisalign is…

What is Invisalign Orthodontic Treatment?

Invisalign orthodontic treatment works like traditional braces, but instead of adjusting the wires every few weeks, the patient will receive a new set of aligners designed to straighten their teeth. The aligners must be worn at all times except when eating, brushing the teeth, or flossing.

As patients progress through the series of aligners, their teeth will be re-positioned until they reach their final position. Those undergoing traditional metal braces treatment will experience the same issues as those with aligners.

Can Aligners Cause Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease is a common dental problem, particularly later in life. The CDC has estimated that over half the population is in some way suffering from periodontal diseases. This figure grew to 77% among people over age 65.

But aligners have never accounted directly for gum disease. It may be your perception that clear aligners need less hygiene maintenance than braces since they can catch food debris easily. This is just not true at all. Although less food debris is caught inside aligners, they remain a barrier that minimizes saliva contact with the gum.

Saliva is a key part of oral health. It protects and demineralizes the tooth. If you prevent it from reaching the tooth surface you will be at higher risk of infections and disease. there is no evidence that aligners cause periodontal disease.

Do Aligners Make Your Gums Bleed?

Your gums may bleed due to inflammation when first wearing aligners. The first week more so than after. Moving teeth means change. Your gum recession or movement may cause bleeding too. The part of the gum tissue most affected by movement is around the teeth.

Another avenue for bleeding is oral health matters during treatment. If you fail to keep a healthy mouth then periodontal disease may set in, this prolongs bleeding and hinders recovery.

Does Invisalign treatment Cause Gum Recession?

Aligners will not cause gum recession directly. but the recession will occur in small ways in some patients. Do not confuse the movement of teeth with gum recession.

Can Invisalign Damage roots?

Invisalign requires root resorption to be activated.  Root movement will occur to complement the movement of the tooth as a whole.  In rare cases, cell responses can damage the root. The way to avoid root damage is to care for the aligners and your oral health during the entire treatment. Care for the things you can see and the things you cannot care for themselves.

Can Aligners Ruin Your Teeth?

A key difference between Invisalign’s patented braces and traditional braces is the increased risk of developing tooth decay. However, Invisalign has fewer complications because they can easily be replaced to maintain great oral health while the plastic barrier prevents saliva from getting into the gum tissue.

Invisalign procedure is painless, but the discomfort can occur when teeth are repositioned. It will not affect your teeth, however. Aligners can cause teeth loss if a person drinks liquid other than water. This is because sugar from drinks stays within the aligner and makes contact with the teeth. This leads to cavities.

Can Invisalign Aligners Cause Damage?

The answer to this question is NO. Damage caused is by external issues as described above. By simply listening to your orthodontist and keeping oral health a priority you can avoid damage and bleeding.
