What Makes Invisalign Unique [Among Others?]

What makes Invisalign unique among others? Cinderella probably didn’t have to worry about getting her teeth straightened – she had a fairy godmother. For the rest of us, however, braces from the orthodontist are still the only available option. These days, thanks to advances in orthodontic and dental science, options abound metal brackets, ceramic brackets, brackets with wires, brackets with rubber bands, decorative additions in different colors and shapes.

Who Needs Braces?

When it comes to smiling improvement, braces are the best. But straight teeth are the nice part – the real issue is your child’s oral health and the function of the mouth. Teeth that are closely jammed together make cleaning a real headache. It’s hard to get dental floss between closely packed teeth and the floss frays easily as it rubs against the tooth surface. Brushing can’t get into the crevices – and let’s face it, kids and teens are not likely to make the extra effort to get their teeth really clean – so the risk of tooth decay goes up.

Widely spaced teeth, however, can collect food in the pockets between teeth. Crooked teeth wear unevenly, may affect the child’s bite and can even cause jaw pain or headaches. Thus an orthodontic assessment is the best way to decide if your child needs his or her teeth straightened.

Invisalign vs. Traditional Systems

Both teeth straightening systems will produce straight teeth, but the similarities end there. All traditional brackets must be attached to the teeth with cement or tight bands and connected to each other by wires, rubber bands or both. These dental appliances are clearly visible with every smile or word, even when they’re made from clear plastic or white ceramic. The appliance, which fits over the teeth, is made of a single piece of clear plastic. It’s so unobtrusive many people will have no idea it’s there. What is really great about the appliance is that it is removable for something like a soccer game or special date.

Invisalign Unique System

Conventional teeth straightening systems are like conventional homes – built by hand, one piece at a time. What makes Invisalign unique is that it’s a computer-generated clear plastic appliance custom-fitted to your child’s teeth. The software generates models based on digital pictures taken by the orthodontist; the software allows the doctor to adjust the appliance design as necessary. Multiple appliances are then created based on the digital images.

Every few weeks, your child switches to a new device, so changes happen very gradually but without the need to spend an hour in the orthodontist’s chair to have the wires and rubber bands adjusted or tightened. The appliance is also smooth – no poking wires or rough spots to rub on lips, cheeks or gums. Fewer orthodontic appointments rare required – a boon to the busy mom’s schedule. In most cases, an appointment is only necessary every four to six weeks.

Daily Difference

Finally, getting your teeth straightened is a day-to-day experience. With conventional systems, there’s the need for extra attention to oral hygiene, hassles with flossing and dietary restrictions. Once your child is “wired up,” treats like popcorn is a thing of the past. Even healthy foods like apples or corn on the cob can be harder to eat without the mess when you’re having your teeth straightened by conventional means.

This is one of the things that make a removable appliance such a great development. Since the retainer is removable, hassles with oral hygiene go away completely and there are no dietary restrictions. Conventional brackets and wires can increase the risk of mouth injury in sports, even with a mouthguard. With this unique system, your child simply takes out the appliance, plays the game and then puts the appliance back in. What’s not to like?
