The world of Orthodontics has come a long way over the past few decades, and nowadays braces and newer methods like Invisalign are generally the preferred options for straightening teeth. However, modern orthodontics only stretches back to the early 18th century, meaning people with crooked teeth weren’t always as lucky as we are today. Furthermore, while the methods used by an 18th or 19th-century orthodontist were still incredibly crude compared to those used by orthodontists today, they are still technological marvels compared to the method once used by ancient Greeks.

Ancient Greeks

Ancient Greece is often considered the birthplace of Western civilization, and in many ways, the Greeks were far ahead of their time. Therefore, it really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to learn they that also took tooth care fairly seriously. Although toothbrushes weren’t yet invented, most Greeks still meticulously picked their teeth clean with toothpicks. As well, they were one of the first civilizations to draw the link between too much sugar and tooth decay.

However, in terms of orthodontics, the ancient Greeks were still quite limited in their tools. Nonetheless, this didn’t stop them from at least trying to straighten crooked teeth, and around the year 1,000 B.C., some would-be Greek orthodontist got the idea to wind a string around the teeth in order to fix dental deformities. Typically known as catgut, this string was actually made of animal intestines, usually from a sheep or goat. In some cases, metal strips were also included to essentially create a very crude form of braces.

For some people, especially teenagers, the thought of having to get braces is one that gives them nightmares. However, thanks to Invisalign and other modern orthodontic methods, correcting dental issues has never been easier. All you need to remember is that at least you were lucky enough to be born in modern times with Invisalign and don’t have to have animal intestines tied around your teeth to correct them.
