Treatment Time for Damon System

When braces were first invented back in 1728, they weren’t the most comfortable or subtle of treatments. In fact, the so-named “Father of Modern Orthodontics,” Pierre Fauchard, was famous for using forceps to move teeth where he wanted them to go – ouch!

Here at Childers Orthodontics, we are happy to report that today’s braces have come a very long way from those earliest of days. Today’s hardware is lightweight, streamlined, flexible and sometimes even near-invisible depending on placement and materials used!

The Damon System is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments offered today for all of these reasons and more.

FAQ

What Is the Damon System?

The Damon System is a treatment that can be successfully used on patients of all ages. The modern, streamlined and sleek hardware make use of what is called “self-ligating” technology to reduce discomfort and shorten treatment times.

The term “self-ligating” means that the system is self-contained and requires no use of elastic bands or metal ties, both of which can cause abrasion and discomfort. The simple hardware consists of just two pieces: an archwire and brackets.

Each tooth gets its own individual bracket in either traditional metal or clear (these are nearly invisible!). The upper set of teeth gets one archwire and the lower set of teeth gets one archwire.

From here, the orthodontist makes small adjustments to ensure the teeth move into proper alignment in the shortest possible time period with the greatest possible comfort to the patient.

The Benefits of the Damon System

The Damon System has become popular over time as its benefits become more widely recognized.

These benefits are the same for all age patients but may be particularly appreciated in young patients, who often lack the patience to do the extra brushing and flossing and dietary/activity modifications required by traditional hardware.

Damon System benefits include (but are not limited to) these:

  • The choice of metal or clear hardware allows for image-sensitive patients to choose the least visible treatment system.
  • The system can treat mild or moderately severe malocclusions (misalignments) of teeth and bite.
  • The hardware is very easy to clean and maintain, with far less brushing and flossing than with traditional hardware.
  • Fewer orthodontist visits are required for adjustments and hardware repairs (on average, only half as many visits as for traditional treatment, which also saves on drive time and expense of treatment).
  • The overall treatment time tends to be shorter by as much as six months when compared to traditional orthodontic treatments.
  • Treatment is much less invasive on average, with less discomfort, fewer abrasions to soft mouth tissues and less risk of damage to hardware through everyday activities.
  • Often the need to extract teeth (for example, with issues of overcrowding) can be completely avoided with the Damon System.
  • There is zero risk of swallowing any of the hardware (elastic bands, O-rings, metal ties) because the Damon System has no external additional parts.
  • The result is the widest, healthiest and most balanced possible smile with exceptional tooth and jaw alignment.
  • The much lighter weight hardware is not only comfier, but places less pressure on teeth and helps to maintain optimal blood flow for fast treatment success.

Talking Treatment Times: How Fast is “Fast?”

It just stands to reason that any orthodontic patient will want to see the results of their treatment right away….and even yesterday, if possible!

After all, that is the whole reason orthodontia was invented: to give patients the chance to have the best oral health as well as a smile to be proud of and show off at every opportunity.

So how fast, exactly, is “fast?” With the Damon System, research has identified precisely how much faster this system can deliver treatment results than traditional (conventional) orthodontic treatment.

The average length of treatment time for conventional orthodontic treatment is 27.5 months, or two years and 3.5 months.

The average length of treatment time for Damon System treatment is 20.3 months, or one year and 8.3 months.

That is a difference of just over seven months! Here, it just makes sense why the Damon system, like the equally popular trailblazing Invisalign system of aligners, has become so popular and in demand among orthodontic patients.

That is seven months free from wearing orthodontic hardware, free from visiting the orthodontist for adjustments, free from wondering and waiting when you will finally have the perfect, beautiful smile you’ve been waiting to see!

How Much Does the Damon System Treatment Cost?

Today is a unique time in the history of orthodontic medicine. With ongoing rapid advances in oral health technology and medical knowledge, orthodontic practitioners are able to achieve rapid results for even the most complex oral health problems.

As a result, not only are children and teens growing up with better overall oral health, but adults are increasingly seeking out orthodontic care to correct longstanding bite issues and improve self-confidence through a beautiful bright, white smile.

One of the most popular additions to today’s orthodontic care options is called the Damon System. Read on to learn more about the process and costs of the Damon System of orthodontic treatment.

What Is the Damon System?

The Damon System is widely considered to be the next generation of orthodontic braces. With lightweight, streamlined orthodontic hardware that is easier to wear and take care of, patients are increasingly choosing the Damon System of braces over traditional orthodontic hardware options.

Patients of all ages can benefit.

The Damon System can be used with children, teens and adult patients with great success. Most patients are deemed good candidates for the Damon System of treatment since it can address both mild and moderate to severe tooth malocclusions (misalignment of teeth and jaws).

Lightweight, elegant hardware.

Because the Damon System uses a sliding archwire instead of traditional elastics and/or o-rings, it creates far less friction inside the mouth. This provides for a greatly enhanced comfort level during treatment and fewer in-office orthodontist visits to adjust the hardware.

The Damon System can also accommodate clear brackets (called Damon Clear) for a near-invisible look during treatment. Teens and adults working in image-sensitive industries particularly appreciate this option!

Easier at-home maintenance and care.

For children and teen patients, in particular, the streamlined hardware can make for much easier brushing, flossing and overall at-home care and maintenance.

Adult patients, too, appreciate being able to spend less time keeping their Damon System hardware clean, sanitary and free of food debris.

More comfortable treatment.

Young patients tend to be the most hesitant to undergo orthodontic treatment because they are understandably fearful of being in pain. However, the Damon System of braces is far less heavy and cumbersome to wear than traditional metal hardware.

The lightweight Damon hardware also places less pressure and restriction on teeth and reduces friction on sensitive mouth tissues, making treatment markedly more comfortable regardless of patient age.

Reduced treatment times.

Perhaps the most popular aspect of the Damon System is that it can reduce treatment times by as much as 7.2 months!

Since no one wants to spend a day longer wearing any type of orthodontic hardware than is absolutely necessary, this has made the Damon System a winning choice for both providers and patients.

What Is the Cost of Damon System Treatment?

When you seek out an orthodontist to correct cosmetic and health issues with your teeth, bite and jaw alignment, your provider will begin by taking a patient history, conducting a complete oral exam, taking X-ray images to look for hidden issues and then developing a recommended plan of orthodontic treatment.

Once there is a thorough understanding of what needs fixing, you can talk with your orthodontist about options, including traditional hardware, the Damon System, Invisalign, and others.

Invisalign is typically only recommended for treatment minor or visible cosmetic issues. The Damon System, on the other hand, can treat more serious orthodontic problems. Traditional hardware tends to be the last choice for most patients today, simply because it can be less comfortable to wear and simple to maintain.

Most patients that seek out orthodontic care are initially concerned about costs – this is just natural when you are considering a period of longer oral health treatment. One common question many patients ask is whether the Damon System is more expensive than opting for traditional orthodontic hardware.

Since no two orthodontic patients’ oral treatment needs will be identical in all ways, this is not always a question that is as easy to answer as it sounds. In most respects, the Damon System cost is comparable to the cost of traditional orthodontic treatment, with one caveat: clear or ceramic hardware can be slightly pricier than opting for standard metal hardware.

There are three other ways that the Damon System of treatment can save you money:

  1. You will likely wear your Damon hardware for 6 to 7 months less than you would wear traditional hardware.
  2. You will not need to schedule as many orthodontic adjustment visits during your Damon treatment.
  3. You will not need to purchase accessories for your Damon hardware such as o-rings, elastic bands, spacers or orthodontic wax.

Getting to Know the Damon System

Technological advances are making it easier and less painful for millions of people to straighten out their smiles. Today, a visit to the orthodontist doesn’t always mean traditional braces. The advent of Invisalign technology and the Damon System makes it easier and less embarrassing to straighten our teeth than ever before. Now, we can finally get the kind of smile we can each portray with pride.

What Is The Damon System?

Damon devices are similar to traditional braces, but with some very important differences. Most noticeably, Damon devices are clear, which means they attract less negative attention while they’re being worn. Instead of metal, plastic brackets and wires connect to a sliding mechanism. Together, this system adjusts itself, as the positioning of the patient’s teeth straightens.
There are multiple benefits to this new type of system. First, they’re much more comfortable than traditional metal devices. Because there isn’t any metal involved, cutting of the gums and interior of the mouth is greatly reduced.

Additionally, the Damon device is much more effective. Teeth are realigned much faster through this method, cutting down the time that the patient is required to wear a corrective device. The use of the Damon mechanism also produces stronger teeth, where traditional methods of tooth correction resulted in weaker, fragile teeth. This means less chipping and cracking of individual teeth are involved.

How does it work?

Memory wire attaches the actual Invisalign brace to a sliding bracket. As the teeth realign over time, the bracket tightens the brace, keeping everything firm and closely bonded. The system applies less force on the teeth than traditional methods. Very often, metal devices required multiple tightenings, as well as frequent tooth extractions and palatal expanders.

The Benefits Of The Damon System

The value of the Damon system is evident in it’s use of transparent brackets and less discomfort for the patient, but there’s still more value found in these devices. For one thing, the faster treatment time is significant. Damon patients finished their treatments 7.2 months sooner than those patients utilizing more traditional methods of tooth correction.

Also, Damon patients required fewer follow up visits with their orthodontist. In cases of traditional metal retainers, patients often have to make frequent return visits to the orthodontist’s office for adjustments and realignments. Damon devices, on the other hand, adjust themselves, requiring only the occasional tweaking.

The greater comfort has been measured in recent studies with patients reporting 60% less discomfort than that experienced by those wearing traditional devices. Going along with the greater level of comfort, there’s also less friction between the teeth. This means there’s also less erosion of the tooth enamel and less deterioration of the teeth in general.

The Damon system also eliminates those crevices where plaque and bacteria tend to populate. This means there’s less tooth decay and a lower relapse risk, once the device has been removed.

The Technology Behind Damon Devices

The technology involved in self-ligating devices is at the heart of this revolutionary new treatment. The brackets are specifically designed to hold the wires out and slightly apart from the teeth, so the pressure one would normally expect is eliminated. Even the phantom discomfort experienced after traditional devices have been removed won’t be experienced by Damon patients.

The memory wires are marvels of modern technology in themselves. These special wires are flexible, before being inserted into the patient’s mouth. Once installed and connected to the rest of the device, the memory wires are heated up by the patient’s body temperature. As the material warms, it attempts to straighten into its normal shape. This action is what pulls the rest of the device, forcing the teeth to realign in the process.

The lighter materials and decreased pressure against the teeth also makes tooth care easier. Where metal brackets pressed harshly against the teeth and made brushing problematic, Damon devices are designed to make tooth care easier. The lack if elastic bands makes it easier to brush and floss more normally. In most cases, the patient can care for his or her teeth just as they normally would, if they weren’t wearing any corrective device at all.

There are two Damon systems in use. Depending on the patient’s situation, the device can be adjusted to serve as either active or passive resistance. The passive system uses smaller wires. This creates less friction and gives the teeth a little more mobility, letting them adjust themselves with less control. Active resistance utilizes a thicker, tenser wire and maintains a stricter control over how the teeth are realigned. This stronger level of control is used with patients in need of a more severe treatment, where they may have a prominent overbite or missing teeth that have forced the rest out of alignment.

The advent of this new technology makes it easier and more comfortable to get the smile of our dreams. No one should go through life fearing to share the warmth of a smile, because their teeth are a source of embarrassment. This is more true today with so many remarkable options than it was just a decade ago.

Damon devices can be applied to anyone, regardless of age. If you’re ready to experience this new technology for yourself or for your children, consult with our orthodontists at your earliest convenience. By taking this first step, you can find out what your best options are for having a set of teeth you will be proud to display.
