Orthodontic Fact #5 Braces are now worn as a fashion statement

smileHave Your Teeth Straightened With Unique Orthodontic Devices

If you are a teenager who needs braces, then you don’t need to wear boring color-matching ceramic or metallic brackets to fix your teeth. Today, many teenagers are choosing colorful brackets and wires for their braces in order to have a fashionable appearance. The most important thing about getting your teeth straightened is visiting an orthodontist for an evaluation. When you have moderate to serious malocclusions, you will need to wear wires and brackets to repair the problems. However, when you only have mild misalignments, you can wear removable Invisalign aligners instead.

Colorful Brackets and Wires Will Make Orthodontic Treatment a Lot of Fun

An orthodontist will provide information concerning colorful brackets or bands. You can choose one color such as red, blue or yellow, but you can also select a rainbow of different colors to express your personality. Wearing beautiful colors of brackets and wires can offer you an attractive facial appearance along with looking fantastic with your clothing. If you select a unique color of braces, then your friends will recognize you anywhere by simply seeing your smile. Wearing bright colorful wires and brackets can make undergoing orthodontic treatment fun.

Learn More About Modern Orthodontic Treatment

People have been trying to straighten their teeth since the early 1700s. The first braces were flat strips of metal that someone connected to a patient’s teeth with thick thread. Unfortunately, this treatment wasn’t very effective, but today, you can visit an orthodontist for an evaluation to learn more about modern Invisalign aligners or braces. First, you will require an evaluation of computer software to determine what type of malocclusions you have to determine if you have mild, moderate or serious problems. If you are a teenager or adult, then you are often able to wear aligners.

Choose Devices That Are Difficult to See

Aligners are made of durable plastic, but you will switch to a new set every two weeks to shift your teeth slowly into the correct positions. Each set of aligners is made in a slightly different way, and your treatment time with Invisalign aligners typically requires six months to one year. If an adult or teenager has severe malocclusions, then he will need to wear braces, but there are new devices that are worn on the backs of your teeth. Alternatively, you can request color-matching brackets and invisible wires, helping to reduce your embarrassment while undergoing long-term orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic Fact #7 Some dental wires used in dental braces are activated by body heat and were developed by NASA.

nasaOrthodontic Fact #7 Some dental wires used in dental braces are activated by body heat and were developed by NASA.

How NASA Has Improved Orthodontic Treatment

NASA has made a valuable contribution to orthodontic care by creating wires that are activated by body heat. These metallic wires are useful for braces so that the devices fit better on a patient’s teeth. The only way to know if you require orthodontic treatment is to schedule an appointment with an orthodontist who has the top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment. You might feel as if you are in a scientific laboratory in a modern orthodontic facility that uses computer-assisted X-ray machines. Within minutes, you can see how your teeth look now along with seeing how your teeth will look with orthodontic treatment.

Treatment For Malocclusions Can Require Six Months to Four Years

If an orthodontist determines that you have only mild malocclusions, then you can wear custom-fitted Invisalign aligners for six months to one year. However, if you have major malocclusions, then you will require brackets and wires to repair your teeth in two to four years. Today, you can choose braces that have tiny brackets and thin wires that are often placed on the backs of your teeth where the devices are nearly impossible to see. Alternatively, you can select color-matching ceramic brackets that are also barely noticeable by others.

Orthodontic Fact #9 Irregularities of the teeth is one of the earliest writings about dental deformities, written by Hippocrates in 400 B.C.

hippocratesOrthodontic Fact #9 Irregularities of the teeth is one of the earliest writings about dental deformities, written by Hippocrates in 400 B.C.

Hippocrates Was Unable to Fix Irregularities of the Teeth

Hippocrates was a physician in Greece who described malocclusions of the teeth in 400 B.C. While the people living in those times were unable to do anything about irregularities of their teeth, you can visit an orthodontist for treatment. At an orthodontic facility, you can have a modern examination with top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment that can project how your teeth will look after you wear Invisalign aligners or braces. You will learn if you have mild or serious malocclusions that require treatment to improve your smile and bite. Some orthodontic treatments require only six months to complete while others can last as long as four years.

You Can Fix Your Teeth With Modern Orthodontic Treatment

The individuals living in ancient Greece weren’t able to correct wide spaces between their teeth, leading to unattractive smiles and the inability to chew food properly. Having straight teeth is important for your overall well-being because it prevents other health problems such as chronic headaches or bruxism. If you can wear clear Invisalign aligners, then you can remove the devices to brush and floss your teeth. When you need to wear braces, the brackets and wires will remain on your teeth, but you can request lingual devices that are placed on the backs of your teeth.

Orthodontic Fact #10 The first ever certified orthodontist in the United States is Dr. Charles Tweed from the late 18th century

dr charles tweedOrthodontic Fact #10 The first ever certified orthodontist in the United States is Dr. Charles Tweed from the late 18th century

A century ago, people who had crooked teeth didn’t have many options. Braces had not been invented yet, much less modern alternatives like Invisalign. Orthodontics was just getting started. One of the key figures in the evolution of this specialty was Dr. Charles H. Tweed, who became the first professionally certified orthodontist in the United States.

Background and Education

Charles Tweed was born in 1895 in Phoenix, Arizona. He did undergraduate work at Stanford University. Tweed graduated from the University of California in 1919 with a D.D.S. He soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to study at the Angle School of Orthodontia. Edward Angle, who founded the school, was one of the seminal figures in the emerging field of orthodontics. Young Dr. Tweed soon became one of Angle’s proteges.

Research and Innovation

During the early 1920s, Angle invented a remarkable device that he called an edgewise appliance. Comprised of wire and adjusted with bands, this device gradually straightened a patient’s teeth. The edgewise appliance soon acquired the name braces. In 1925, Angle selected Dr. Tweed to help him to prepare this innovation for manufacturing and introduction to clinical practice.

Over time, Tweed observed that the failure rate for braces was high. In some patient, the teeth had a tendency to relapse and shift back to their crooked positions. Tweed realized that this problem could be solved by selectively extracting a few teeth. Tweed presented his findings to the American Association of Orthodontists in 1940.

Career and Legacy

Tweed eventually moved back to the western United States, settling in his native Arizona. In 1947, he created the Charles H. Tweed for Orthodontic Research. Today, the Foundation continues its mission of fostering the exchange of ideas and providing cutting-edge resources to the orthodontic profession.

Smile – It’s the second best thing you can do with your lips.

should i get invisalignSmile – It’s the second best thing you can do with your lips.

Improve Your Smile With Orthodontic Treatment

Many people believe that smiling is the second best thing that you can do with your lips, but if you have wide gaps between your teeth, then you probably avoid smiling at anyone. Fortunately, there are fantastic ways to repair your misaligned teeth, and you can learn more about braces or Invisalign aligners by visiting an orthodontist. For minor malocclusions, you can wear clear plastic aligners if you are an adult or teenager. Children always require brackets and wires to fix their misaligned teeth, but there are color-matching and lingual devices available. Depending on your malocclusions, you must wear orthodontic devices for six months to four years.

Orthodontic Treatment Prevents Additional Health Problems

This may seem like a long time, but repairing your teeth can prevent numerous health problems in the future. Poorly aligned teeth can lead to breathing or speech problems, and some individuals will grind their teeth at night, leading to severe headaches. Having your teeth straightened is not about being vain because you need a strong biting surface to consume a healthy diet of lean protein and vegetables. If your teeth are in proper alignment, then you are less likely to have bad breath or gingivitis because it is easier to brush and floss your teeth to remove food debris.

Look Better In Your Photographs With Orthodontic Treatment

The designer Shawn Lukas believes that a plain wall requires artwork, so you can place a photograph of you smiling on a wall to make it beautiful. If you look at older photographs from the past, then you will notice that people didn’t smile. This is because many individuals had unattractive smiles with crooked or poorly spaced teeth. However, you can visit an orthodontist to repair your ugly smile in order to have gorgeous photographs. The best time to begin orthodontic treatment is during childhood, but you can also wear braces or Invisalign aligners when you are an adult.

Modern Orthodontic Examinations Are Fast and Easy

Undergoing an orthodontic examination is simple because an orthodontist will have modern medical imaging equipment to take X-rays of your teeth and facial bones. Within minutes, you will know what type of orthodontic treatment is required for you or your child’s teeth. Most individuals only need to wear aligners because they have mild malocclusions that are repairable in one year. If you are an adult, then wearing aligners is possible, and you can remove the devices to perform oral hygiene. All children and some teenagers or adults must wear braces instead to fix major misalignments of their teeth.

I Don’t Have Any Dental Problem: Should I Still Visit and Orthodontist?

orthodontist visitI Don’t Have Any Dental Problem: Should I Still Visit and Orthodontist?

Orthodontic treatment for past generations used to be reserved for the those with significant dental problems or families in higher socio-economic brackets. However, access to quality orthodontic treatment has greatly expanded since the mid-twentieth century. Now, more children are being fitted with braces than ever before. Not only kids but adults of all ages are seeking orthodontist consultations to improve the way the function and appearance of their teeth. The need for orthodontic treatment does not always become evident visually, especially at a young age. Sometimes, dental problems can emerge or become visible in adulthood. Situations can occur, such as a sports injury or tooth development issue, that may raise the need for orthodontia.

Here are three reasons to consider an orthodontic consultation, even if you do not have immediate concerns about the condition of your teeth.

Convenience.

It used to be that being fitted with metal brackets and wires for dental adjustments was painful, time-consuming, and unattractive. That has all changed in recent years. Although a certain amount of discomfort can be expected during initial stages of treatment, most patients adjust very well as they get used to wearing the metals, and later, the rubber bands, that will gently but firmly move their teeth into the desired order. People don’t need to expect months of excruciating pain. Millions of people who wear braces comfortably can attest to the fact that the treatment proceeds smoothly after placement of the hardware. The time required for treatment may involve a period of months for many wearers. People at any age often find their teeth are moved to where they should be at an amazingly rapid pace. Aftercare may include wearing retainers for a period of time, but again, most patients adapt very readily to retainers and often hardly remember they are in place due to the comfortable fit now available. The feeling of being unsightly during treatment is also unnecessary and largely imaginary. With the advent of orthodontic devices like Invisalign, observers often are unaware of the treatment in place because the braces are almost invisible. Some types can be removed at certain times, such as meal time or special occasions. Appearance is not greatly impacted during treatment. Afterward, the patient’s confidence will soar with the beautiful new smile resulting from treatment.

Cost.

The cost of dental orthodontia has become more affordable for many families. Some health insurance programs pay for part of the treatment. Orthodontia health care loans are widely available for those who want to make monthly payments over a period of time. Other payment options include personal savings and credit cards. Almost no one has to go without treatment due to cost. Over the long term, treatment pays for itself in helping patients to obtain a healthy dental structure with problems addressed, which may reduce dental and orthodontic treatment bills in the future.

Benefits.

Most patients will agree enthusiastically that the benefits of orthodontia work are priceless. Newfound confidence in personal appearance and in gaining a lovely smile cannot be overestimated. We have all seen people who try to hide their mouth when smiling, and orthodontia can solve that problem for patients of all ages. Another benefit is more effective nutrition. Healthy eating requires balanced meals that include vegetables and nuts, which can be hard to chew if teeth are missing, tipped, or twisted. Orderly dental structures, both upper and lower, help to ensure healthy chewing and eating, which can help to ensure more effective digestion. Successful orthodontic treatment also keeps teeth in healthier positions, which can prevent bacterial buildup that leads to plaque as well as cavities and gum disease. Avoiding these problems may help to keep teeth healthy as we get older, reducing the need for extractions, fillings, and replacement through bridges, crowns, or implants. Finally, healthy teeth without gaps or bite distortions can facilitate communication and verbal articulation for some people. Orthodontic examinations may reveal teeth below the gum surface that have not yet erupted, or malformations in the bite or jaw that should be corrected, preventing worse problems later.

For a thorough analysis of your teeth that can be seen as well as the unseen structures and issues that may play a role in your dental health, consult an orthodontist for a thorough examination. Hopefully, your teeth will be as healthy as they seem at this time, and no treatment will be needed. But if a problem is found, it can be treated early to minimize complications so that your teeth can look their best and continue to effectively meet your eating and speaking needs.

Why Teenage Patients Have More [TMJ] Problems in the Springtime

bracesWhy Teenage Patients Have More TMJ Problems in the Springtime

Most people associate springtime with blooming flowers, the first glimpses of sunshine after months of gloomy darkness, and beach vacations south of the border. But for those of use in the orthodontic business, springtime is also the time of year when TMJ is at its all-time high. It’s when we’re most accustomed to seeing parents accompanying teenagers complaining of jaw pain into our offices.

Why does this happen? What is TMJ? And why does it seem to reach epidemic proportions during the spring? Here’s what your orthodontist wants you to know.

How Is [Invisalign] Different from Traditional Braces?

invisalign

LAST UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 28, 2017

How is Invisalign Different from Traditional Braces?

When the Invisalign system of aligners first became available in 2000, it opened up new possibilities for patients to achieve the straightest, healthiest smile with less impact to their daily life during treatment. Before that time, the only option for patients with crooked teeth or bite issues was traditional metal hardware.

Today, the aligner system has become one of the most popular choices for orthodontic care nationwide. In particular, professional adults and teens tend to favor aligners because they are less visible to colleagues and peers. However, traditional orthodontic treatment also continues to be a popular choice and offers some types of benefits no other system can yet provide.
