Teeth-friendly Fruits & Vegetables No. 6: Orange
People who are currently patients of an orthodontist are told that they need to take special care of their oral hygiene in order to make sure that their teeth and gums remain healthy. This is true whether they wear Invisalign or braces, which can only be removed by the dentist. They’re warned that sticky, hard and crunchy foods can get caught in the brackets and wires or even damage them and are to be avoided. Even Invisalign wearers need to brush and floss when they remove their alignment trays.
Benefits of Oranges
One food that’s acceptable for orthodontic patients is the orange. The fruit is sweet and good ones are full of juice. Though the juice is admittedly acidic, proper dental care should mitigate whatever damage it can cause to tooth enamel. Better yet, unlike many of the snack foods that people who wear braces should avoid anyway, oranges are good for the health.
Oranges are famously abundant in vitamin C. One fresh, medium-sized orange provides 93 percent of the daily value of this vitamin, which is also an anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are substances that protect the bodily cells from injury from free radical molecules. But vitamin C’s main job is to stimulate the body to produce collagen, a protein that makes up a large part of connective tissue. Collagen goes into creating dentin, the hard substance in the tooth that protects the pulp chamber and is in turn protected by the enamel. Oranges are rich in fiber, the B vitamins, copper, potassium and calcium, which also supports the health of the teeth.
So instead of reaching for that piece of candy or stick of hard beef jerky, a person under an orthodontist’s care should go for an orange. It tastes good, and it’s very good for them and their teeth.
