Tooth Brushing Mistake #6: “Starting in the Same Place Every Time”

Brushing your teeth seems like it should be a pretty straightforward process. You squeeze out the toothpaste, brush the top row, brush the bottom row, try to get the back teeth that your orthodontist always warns you about. But if you get stuck in a routine, you might find that you’re not brushing your teeth as thoroughly as you could be. This is especially an issue for people with braces or Invisalign, who need to brush their teeth carefully to ensure that they don’t end up with cavities. So what’s the trick that a lot of people are missing?

The Common Mistake

One of the most common mistakes that people make when brushing their teeth is starting in the same place every time. When you’ve been brushing your teeth for a while–and most of us have–it’s natural to fall into a routine. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing: it’s important to set a routine for your kids so that they get into the habit of brushing their teeth every day. But if you follow the same pattern every time you brush, you’ll find that you keep repeating bad habits: missing the same teeth every time, only flossing the front teeth, and so on. And when you’re stuck in a routine like that, it’s a safe bet that your teeth aren’t being cleaned thoroughly.

Break your Bad Habits

For a better brushing experience, try mixing it up! Don’t start in the same place every time. Start with different teeth, making sure to scrub the places that you tend to miss. And remind your children to do this, too. This enaturedures that even if you miss a spot while you’re brushing, you’ll probably cover it next time you brush. You’ll break bad habits and find yourself with a complete, thorough brushing that leaves your teeth white and your mouth fresh and minty. And your (or your kids’) orthodontist will definitely notice the results!
