Toothbrushing Mistake No.10: “Not Changing the Toothbrush Often Enough”
A New Toothbrush Keeps Your Teeth and Gums Healthier
When you use an old toothbrush, you are not providing the best care for your teeth and gums. The bristles on a toothbrush will wear down in a few months, and dangerous bacteria will begin to multiply on the bristles. Instead of removing food debris and plaque with an old toothbrush, you are adding new bacteria to your oral cavity. To have fresh breath, healthy gum tissue and fewer cavities, make sure to replace your toothbrush four times a year. A great way to remember to switch to a new toothbrush is to write a note on a calendar, and you can buy several toothbrushes at one time.
Choose a New Toothbrush Carefully
If you wear braces or aligners, then talk to your orthodontist about the best toothbrush to care for your gums and teeth. You will probably need a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging the enamel on your teeth while protecting the wires and brackets on your braces. However, take time to choose a toothbrush with the right type of handle and head to make brushing your teeth more comfortable. You can remove your clear plastic Invisalign aligners several times a day in order to brush and floss your teeth, but make sure to wear your aligners as much as possible.
